Monofilaments are a screening device used to assess loss of protective sensation. - Hold the Filament by the paper handle
- Use a smooth motion to touch the filament to the skin on your foot for 1-2 seconds. Touch alongside of, and NOT directly on, an ulcer, callus, or scar. Push to make the filament bend.
- Touch the filament in all sites circled on the drawing on back of the monofilament.
- Place a + in the circle if you can feel the filament at the site and a - if you cannot feel the filament.
The single use Monofilament Tester is an excellent tool to determine nerve issues or neuropathy in patients.
